Department Aims
An inclusive, dynamic and creative department committed to mixed ability teaching and learning to ensure progression, support and challenge for all learners.
The department aims to encourage learners to analyse, explore and evaluate a range of media texts and to decipher their hidden ideological messages which are aimed at mass and niche audiences.

Key Stage Four Information:
GCSE Media Studies Single Award (AQA)

  • Unit 1: Written Examination (40%)
  • Unit 2: Controlled Assessment(60%)
Unit 2 Controlled Assessment Assignments:

  • Introductory Assignment (Advertising Industry) 15 marks.
  • Cross Media Assignment (Film Industry) 30 marks.
  • Practical Production (Magazine industry) 45 marks.

AS Media Studies (OCR)

G321: Foundation Portfolio in Media (Controlled Assessment) 100 marks.
G322: Key Media Concepts (Television Drama) 100 marks.
G321: Foundation Portfolio in Media:
  • Learners create, film and edit the titles and opening sequence of a fiction film.
G322: Key Media Concepts (Television Drama)
  • Section A: Learners are required to analyse an unseen audio-visual sequence and make reference to textual analysis and representation.
  • Section B: Learners are required to analyse the film industry and to answer one question on institutions and audiences.

A2 Media Studies (OCR)

G324: Advanced Portfolio in Media
  • Learners study film promotion and create, film and edit a film trailer, produce a media portfolio and a presentation of their research, planning and evaluation.
G325: Critical Perspectives in Media
  • Section A: Learners are required to answer two questions on theoretical evaluation of production.
  • Section B: Candidates answer one question from a choice of six from Contemporary Media issues.
