Retirement Announcement

THANK YOU, AND FAREWELL...

Shirley High School wishes to announce that Ms M Francis - Deputy Principal, will be retiring from the teaching profession on the grounds of ill health on the 31st of January 2025 after a lengthy and distinguished teaching career spanning three decades.

Ms Francis started working at Shirley High School in 1997 as Head of Girls PE and was subsequently promoted to various other senior roles at the school including that of Senior Vice Principal in 2016 and Deputy Principal in 2021. She has worked tirelessly throughout her career and has always ensured that Shirley High School was kept up to date with evolving trends, themes and borough-wide issues.  She has also played a key role within Croydon. She worked with families who have had 2 generations either directly or indirectly influenced by her in the last 27 years at Shirley High School.

Ms Francis has made a strong contribution to the pastoral care and well-being of our students throughout this time, most recently through her leadership of personal development and safeguarding across the school. Ms Francis has enriched the lives of our students as an outstanding teacher who was always willing to organise and run extra-curricular activities such as school trips and sporting activities, such as netball coaching and fitness classes.

Ms Francis has been a valued member of staff at Shirley High School over the past 27 years and will be truly missed by students and staff alike.

We would like to offer Ms Francis our heartfelt thanks and gratitude for her contributions to Shirley High School. We wish Ms Francis all the very best for the future.

The Governing Board and all of the Shirley High School community.

  • Amazing Post-16 results. 25% of our students off to Russell Group universities.

    Published 01/05/24

“The Doctor will see you now….”

One of the highlights of our Post 16 results is to celebrate that one of our own students has secured their place at Queen Mary’s University to study Medicine.  Ivan S, who has been at Shirley High School since year 7, achieved outstanding AAA grades in Biology, Chemistry and Maths  'I am so incredibly proud to be the first Shirley High Student to be going to University to study medicine. This has come through dedication and commitment, alongside the amazing support and encouragement I received from the teachers. I want others to know to trust in the process. Hard work and commitment will pave a road to success. I wholeheartedly believe that I would not be in this position without the guidance and belief I received, and I cannot thank the school enough. It highlights that the sixth form has students' personal goals and achievements at its heart.’

Shirley High School Sixth Form is celebrating unprecedented success and Principal Tyrone Myton stated that the excellent outcomes of Ivan and all the other students paves the way for future success: “We are so proud of all of our students’ achievements, but especially Ivan’s. His hard work and dedication embody the values of our school and the constant drive of our sixth form to be scholarly and professional. By thriving in their studies, our students have secured the next step of their educational and career journey.  They have shown that Shirley High Sixth Form can compete with the best KS5 establishments in the country. No matter the background of the student, we are determined and committed to helping them achieve their full potential.”

A number of students are also celebrating fantastic results, including Daniel N who secured A*, A, Distinction* in Biology, Maths and Sport; Joseph L achieved A, A, Distinction* in Maths, Physics and Music; Habib E-J secured A, A, B in Biology, Chemistry and Maths and Rhianna B who achieved A, B, B in Biology, Maths and Physics.  We are incredibly proud of all our students, with 25% leaving the school to study at Russell Group universities.

We would also like to highlight Maria who arrived at our Sixth form in September 2022 from Ukraine speaking no English. Through her hard work and the outstanding support from her teachers, she has achieved B,B in Art and Photography and will be continuing her study of the arts at university in the UK. Her resilience and creativity is so inspiring and she is a role model for all within our community.

23% of our students achieved A*-A grades and 47% of students achieved A*-B or equivalent across all qualifications.  All of whom worked incredibly hard to secure these grades as they take their next steps towards their bright futures.
